Assistant Professor of Fine Arts

The Department of Arts and Communication at the University of Houston-Downtown seeks a tenure-track person as Assistant Professor of Fine Arts with an emphasis in Arts Administration that includes the development and supervision of student internships. Candidates with successful grant-writing experience will be especially attractive.


RESPONSIBILITIES: Teach, both face-to-face and online, a combination of four/three lower and upper-level courses in support of the department’s Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts degree and the university’s general education program. Possible teaching areas include: Managing the Arts; Producing Theatre; Gallery Management and Supervision; Accounting for the Arts; Marketing the Arts; Profit and Non-profit Organization and Structure. Will also be required to interact with the Houston arts community to find, develop, and supervise student internships. Candidate will also be assigned to teach introductory courses in theatre, art, music, or similar fine arts courses as related to their expertise.  Additionally, candidate will participate in and have the opportunity to teach graduate courses in the Master of Arts in Non-Profit Management program.


The awarding of tenure requires an established and continuous record of successful teaching and scholarship/creative activity and a positive and constructive record of service to the department, the university, and the profession. Active involvement with regional and national arts organizations and evidence of significant and noteworthy artistic management and administration are expected. The candidate should also have a record of working with students of varied, multi-cultural backgrounds who are non-arts majors and should possess excellent communication skills.










REQUIREMENTS:  Ph.D. in-hand at the time of appointment in Arts Administration or related field. ABD candidates projected to complete their degrees by February 1, 2021 are also encouraged to apply.  Proficiency with computer programs (ex., Adobe Suite, Excel) is necessary.


DESIRED: Experience in working with non-profit organizations; starting a performing or visual arts theatre/gallery/business; supervising internships; successful grant-writing. Secondary specialization in Art, Art History, Music, Music History, Theatre, Theatre History, or Museum Studies is highly desirable.
